desdemona has been embezzling money from othello for years, but othello is too proud to admit it. when he finds out about her infidelities, he decides to call off their marriage and take a venetian mistress instead. he arranges to have all the belongings he has left of desdemona shipped to venice. iago convinces roderigo to arrange a tryst between desdemona and cassio, who is now in love with desdemona. roderigo then kills cassio.
roderigo, now master of cyprus, has desdemona drugged. he then has her dressed in a man’s uniform and tries to trick cassio into believing that desdemona has slept with him. cassio, believing that desdemona has cheated on othello, decides to commit suicide.
desdemona was a very beautiful young woman, and roderigo is a very handsome man. iago insinuates to roderigo that othello will be angry to find out that desdemona has been unfaithful to him. iago continues to undermine othello’s trust in desdemona, convincing othello that desdemona has been unfaithful to him by sending desdemona and roderigo on a secret trip to cyprus, and that desdemona is now secretly married to roderigo. however, roderigo and desdemona have not actually been married.
othello, upon learning of the false marriage of desdemona and roderigo, decides that he must kill desdemona and roderigo to save his honor, even though he has yet to suspect that desdemona is secretly married to iago.
othello accuses desdemona of infidelity. desdemona is then put on trial for murder. in order to prove that desdemona is guilty of murdering cassio, iago points out that cassio showed up at desdemona’s house at the very same time that iago was there talking to desdemona. othello condemns desdemona to death by hanging. othello warns desdemona that, when she is hanging from the gallows, if she has a handkerchief in her hand, to keep it in her hand, because she can throw it down from the gallows as a [o]nly piece of her [o]ffering her prayers for [a]ccession to heaven. if she drops it, she will be thought a [w]ho had practiced [f]raud.
the title role is played by anita vashon, a dedicated new england theater actress. she did a fine job, both in the physical and the vocal aspects of the play, but her desdemona is almost too good, and she lacks iago. it was hard to know what to do with her, and the material got a little sluggish as a result. but she makes up for it with a voice that is utterly captivating.

i did a lighting design for this production in which i let the actors free to create their own lighting. the idea was to make the scenes as naturalistic as possible, and to bring as much of the ambience and atmosphere of the play as possible. what i liked about the results is that they were like mini-sets that did not compete for attention with the set. speech and debate is an example, with the whole play taking place at a lectern, and the actors always being on stage, but a space that the audience never sees.
the laramie project is another play that works best with this kind of lighting. it is staged in the center of a square stage, where the two sets are almost identical, and this is done in such a way that the audience never knows when the action switches from one set to the other. one of the sets could be empty, and the other could be set up for the entire play, depending on what the actors need. the actors are almost always on stage, creating a feeling of intimacy that is absent in other productions.
