To get closer to them, you need to use the direction you are currently moving in. Once you fight a follower you will see a set of stats for the follower, and once you get close enough to them you can fight.
When you fight, the follower will actually fight you. After they fight you, they will have several rounds to gather energy and keep fighting. After they find enough energy, they will use a move and/or attack that will start off with a high amount of damage, and then drop the amount of damage as they use it. The first few attacks of each round will deal high damage, and then the amount of damage will drop as they start using it. The amount of damage can be changed by assigning more of it to the attacks. There is a cooldown period before you can use any attacks after you use a move or attack, so you can get the maximum amount of damage out of it, if you still have enough stamina.
Once you finish a fight, you will receive points based on the amount of damage you dealt, as well as how much energy your follower gathered. You also receive points based on how much damage you dealt to them, as well as the amount of stamina they lost. You can then use these points to upgrade your weapon/armor, increase your damage/stamina, or move further.
