The present invention relates to an image forming apparatus which is capable of forming a color image by superimposing black, magenta, cyan and yellow images on an intermediate transfer member.
2. Description of the Related Art
Conventionally, there have been proposed various image forming apparatuses which can form a color image by superimposing a plurality of (usually four) colors of toner images on an intermediate transfer member as disclosed, for example, in Japanese Laid-Open Patent Publication No. 4-12300. It is assumed that a yellow toner image formed on a photoconductor is secondarily transferred to the intermediate transfer member. Then, the yellow toner image is primary-transferred to a transfer medium while remaining on the intermediate transfer member, so that a color image is formed on the transfer medium.
In this case, the yellow toner image is transferred to the intermediate transfer member while being offset to the color image already formed thereon. In other words, the primary transfer is performed in a state in which the intermediate transfer member and a transfer medium overlap each other. As a result, it is necessary to remove the color image already formed thereon and remove the yellow toner image on the intermediate transfer member, prior to the primary transfer of the yellow toner image to the transfer medium.
Therefore, an arrangement is made such that a cleaning unit is provided to remove the color image and a cleaning unit is provided to remove the yellow toner image on the intermediate transfer member, with a certain interval therebetween. When the next yellow toner image is transferred, the cleaning units, which are disposed at different positions, separately clean the respective intermediate transfer members.
In a conventional image forming apparatus which can form a color image by using a plurality of toners, after a yellow toner image is transferred to an intermediate transfer member, a cleaning unit is generally placed so as to be positioned adjacent to the intermediate transfer member.
