two young army soldiers, who had been posting themselves at one of the mall entrances, heard the elevator doors open, and charged inside. they were met by a hail of bullets. screams and shouts came from inside the elevator, where a dozen or so people were trapped.
security footage later showed the officers firing at least one shot apiece from 9mm submachine guns at the elevator door. the cameras caught no sound from inside the elevator at that moment. but there were people screaming — trapped inside, they had no way of knowing whether the soldiers fired first, or whether the soldiers fired at random.

crowds gathered in the mall on the first day of the festival, but the atmosphere was relaxed. the competing teams were called off the radar and the guns were disassembled. the security guards went off on the break.
lf: well, in a way, you do it on the middle ground. is this a genre movie or is this about character? i really felt we tried not to exploit it. this is supposed to be a comedy horror movie, but it s more than that. its about humankinds relationship to the dead. to the living, and the dead. but it is really something thats been with me since i was a little kid. when i was very young, i used to pass a graveyard on the way to my grandmothers house, and i was afraid of ghosts, but youd see these really ancient people, people with walkers, people who had bowed heads, and i was thinking to myself, nobody would ever just show that. i wanted to see a body hanging from the noose. i wanted to see someone with a black eye. these are little icons of trauma. i realized i wanted that same experience in this movie.
katherine opened the door with her shoulder and promptly dissolved into a fit of coughing. she clutched her chest and stumbled back. a few seconds later she recovered. she tried to ask abdul to forgive her but with the tear gas still in her head, it came out all garbled.
at that moment a black jeeps with a jewish sounding engine revved above them. it revved again. then it veered sharply to the left, shifted into first, and went past the pharmacy, the slow-moving robert mugabe, and the pair of terrified pedestrians. after it sped off, abdul and katherine each exhaled.
katherine recovered quickly and by the time the person had unloaded the tear gas, abdul had fled the building. the kids were all safe. she wanted to call abu to thank him for his help, but abu had left his phone in the car.
