the main sites at heshbon are tell er-rasas, tell el-khirbat, tell el-abni (tell el-kheleifeh), and the excavations at tell hesban. the city was probably an important egyptian fortification in the 16thcentury b.c. during the battles between the egyptian and hittite rulers, between 1550 and 1530 b. the amarna letters refer to heshbon as the home of the king’s commander in canaan. it served as a major fortified town during the israelites conquest of canaan. at the end of the 13thcentury b., the amorites, led by king mesha, were in control of this territory. mesha had defeated the king of moab and captured his capital city, dhiban. he had also captured the city of heshbon, which controlled the road to jerusalem. a number of scholars have suggested that some of the old testament references to heshbon are referring to the town of zeredah or zeredathah, just south of shechem in western transjordan. a recent article in biblical archaeology review suggests that zeredathah was the location of a large fortified city that was conquered by the israelite tribes before their conquest of canaan. the fortress that sihon, king of heshbon, had in the region where heshbon is identified today is often thought to be this town. archaeological evidence now suggests that the israelite conquest of the region was around 1213 b.c.e., not the late 11thcentury as some scholars once thought. the israelite conquest of canaan, with the exception of transjordan, was completed around 1050 b.[3] zeredathah may have been a part of the transjordanian kingdom, or perhaps a separate nation that went by the name of heshbon, or perhaps a successor kingdom to the 12thcentury kingdom of israel. if this later theory is correct, the philistines in the 12thcentury may have been from this area as well.
