An interactive iOS & Android App is being developed to improve basic English language skills of rural students. The ‘Native One’ app is a primary English language learning app and a digital literacy one that offers a variety of educational games and activities. The app has a series of activities to help students practice simple verb and grammar for them to practice the language along with spelling, vocabulary and phonetics. The language skills are tested through the app, to enable parents, students, teachers and other stakeholders to identify students’ weak points. Parents of a smartphone-toting child will be able to test their child’s English skills by self-scoring the app. After the child’s performance on a certain section has been evaluated, they will be able to share this information with other stakeholders, for instance parents, teachers, pre-primary institution officials and schools.

In The review, a teacher told about a story-map program in which students were asked to reflect on the events of a day in the life of a family. The teacher described a homework assignment that asked students to map the events of the day by the hour. You will be able to understand the people of other languages (almost all of which are Kannada-speaking), and understand why they use the language. You will be able to recognize many aspects of the study of languages. You will learn about language and its relation to culture, society, religion, as well as linguistic features and word choice. You will be able to learn about the origins of various words. You will learn about speech patterns and characteristics. You will be able to learn about words and word order. You will be able to recognize common sentences and grammatical words. You will be able to recognize and translate grammatical constructions. You will be able to study the history of Kannada, learn the origins of the language, the Indo-Aryan language, and the language of the Dravidians, Tamil, or Telugu.

The first chapters of this study are devoted to the history of Kannada literature, an aspect that I have dealt with elsewhere. I think there are two reasons why I have done that. First, it is the way the main body of the book is structured, that is, the chapters in the main body deal with certain types of texts and with Kannada or Kannadiga writers. Second, the development of Kannada literature can be traced over a long period and can thus give us a perspective on the history of ideas which I could not quite grasp in the chronological time-frame. Since I am a historian, I have mainly relied on the recorded facts to prove that those who lived in certain places at certain times were of particular importance. In addition, the history of Kannada literature in the present is bound to be incomplete, for a man like Zvelebil did not come into being. He and others like him are so many. We can only emphasize that history is a human activity, and that it is as much about people’s lives as about events.
If the local teacher training institutions can change the misperceptions in rural India then there is no reason why Indian children in rural schools in Bihar or Maharashtra cannot be trained and later become role models for other children in rural India. The need in the countryside is for such schools and such teachers rather than a top down instruction model to teach in Marathi or Kannada. Schools in India have students that include many children who speak a mixture of languages, including languages not even spoken in the state the school is located in, such as English and Hindi. These schools need to be taught in Hindi or in English, rather than in just a dialect of the mother tongue, as this is seen to be the normal curriculum. Decentralizing the teaching of languages has to be a major focus of all language education policy and certainly English education policy and practice in India.
