Selecting with Layers
Photoshop has two types of layers: _raster_ layers, which store the actual color or grayscale version of your image, and _vector_ layers, which are composed of lines, bezier paths, and shapes. You can apply several layer styles to any layer, and you can work with multiple layers at once.
Selecting with Layers
Making selections in Photoshop is common. After making a selection, you can add effects to the selection or use the Selection tool to move the selection around. This is an immensely powerful tool, allowing you to make multiple selections of shapes, colors, and text to then manipulate as you wish.
Figure 4-9 shows a simple image with a rectangular selection inside a layer. When you select the Rectangle tool from the toolbox or press Shift+R, the Rectangular Selection tool displays. Click and drag a rectangular selection around the photo to create a selected area. Clicking on a pixel inside the selection—in this case, the highlighted pixel in the top-right corner of the image—turns it a specific color. You can change colors by clicking and dragging with the right mouse button over the selected area. Clicking on a different color turns the color of that pixel to the selected color.
When you finish selecting, you can press Enter (Return on a Mac) to select the entire background in the layer. You can then drag the layer to reposition the image or make other changes using the toolbox or the Layers panel.

Trimming and Crop (Saving the Outline)
Select the Trim tool. Press the Ctrl key, and press and hold the Spacebar to click on the image thumbnail.
Select the Crop tool. Press the Ctrl key, and press and hold the Spacebar to click on the image thumbnail.
Note: You can also select the Trim tool and then press the Tab key to move the selection rectangle to the crop tool.
You’ll now be able to edit the selection rectangle using the cursor.
To trim an image, click and drag the rectangle selection around the image.
You can press the Enter key to finalize the selection. You can also click on the “Draw” icon to make a fresh selection if you accidentally trimmed too much of the image.
You can manually remove the selection by pressing the Backspace key.
Saving the Trim
To save the trimmed image, open the Layers panel, and open the history panel (default key is Ctrl+D).
Select “Trim” in the history panel. Click “OK” to close the history panel.
Copy and Paste
Select the Clipboard (Window→Clipboard).
Hold down the Ctrl key, and click on the image thumbnail to select it. You will now be able to paste the image to another image.
Paste the image.
Delete the clipboard.
Select the new image using the Magic Wand tool, and press the Delete key to delete the old image.
Alternatively, you can use the Eraser tool to remove the background.
Crop Image
Select the Crop tool.
Press the Alt key, and click and drag the corner to change the crop area.
You can change the crop area by clicking and dragging the corners of the crop area.
You can also press the Home key to reset the crop area.

You can use a color gradient to change the color of an object and manipulate that color in a photograph. In this illustration, there is a color overlay on an image of a vintage sign. In Photoshop, it is done by painting the overlay over the photograph.
The Lasso tool allows you to draw a straight or curvy freehand line.
The Magic Wand or the Gradient Tool is a tool used to select an object, specifically an image, that is made up of a range of colors. This tool is most often used for painting and retouching, where you are selecting and changing pixels within a particular color range. You can use the Gradient tool to select the colors of an image and define a shape that can be used to make other adjustments.
The Splatter tool allows you to make full color images with a variety of textures.
The Surface Blur tool blurs, swirls, or blurs and swirls parts of an image, creating a more dreamy and abstract look.
The Pen Tool allows you to draw with precision.
The Pencil tool allows you to draw quickly. It is useful to use along with the Brush or Clone Stamp tool to draw directly on images.
