First, let me say that Lightroom 5 is a great application for photographers that absolutely needs the new features it packages. On the flip side, those that already have Photoshop CS5, Photoshop CS5 Extended, Photoshop CS6, Lightroom 3, or Lightroom 3.5 are likely to be fine with the last version of Photoshop in the Lightroom product line. For those that want to move up from the last version of Lightroom, they have plenty to choose from.
As always with Adobe releases, I will begin with a rundown of the major new features to the new version of Lightroom. I will then take a look at specifically how these features work and the new features in detail. If you want to skip this part, here’s the quick…sort of… summary if you’re on a hurry to decide if you need Lightroom.
Let’s start with the major new and old Lightroom features. Most photographers have experienced the dreaded “Save for Web.jpg” filetypes for the last decade or so. Lightroom not only allows you to create files in another format, but it can also create JPEGs directly from Raw (DNG) files without first converting it to a JPG.
Between lenses and filters and Curves and Levels and Hue/Saturation, Photoshop offers hundreds of tools to help you in your work, from basic image-editing tasks to advanced retouching. Each tool has a function, which is the reason you need to know how to use it. Learn how to use them, and all the cool things they can do will be revealed. If you are a beginner, you will want to start with basic tools, such as an eraser, layer palette, and ruler. Of course, it’s always a good idea to read through the Help documents for each tool to get a good overview of each. There is an entire book that discusses every feature you can think of in Photoshop; that’s how knowledgeable this program is.
The latest version of Photoshop is Photoshop CC. With a subscription to the Creative Cloud, you can use the latest version of Photoshop, Windows, Adobe Lightroom, and other Creative Cloud applications on any computer. But this is not to say that Photoshop does not have good old basic functions. Learning to master these basic functions is actually the easiest way to start out since they will save you time and frustration. Also, learning to use instruments like the Lasso and Magic Wand tools can be super useful. The latest version of Adobe Photoshop Elements brings a new, fast and simple way to export high-quality.png or.jpg images from your images.
