Photoshop’s CorelDRAW (which is included free with a full copy of Photoshop) has been a close competitor to Photoshop for some time, but it never quite caught up with Photoshop in popularity (at least not in the United States). Those who want more advanced options for image manipulation may want to consider Adobe’s more advanced product, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, in addition to Photoshop itself.
If you’re planning to edit digital images in Photoshop, the fastest way to get your work done quickly is to use the workspace. A typical image editing routine involves steps such as the following:
1. Create a new file or open a previously opened file in the appropriate size for the job
2. Adjust the image’s settings, including color, image quality, and resolution
3. Apply some photo adjustments, such as levels, curves, and colors
4. Save the image
Photoshop displays your edits in layers. You can add additional layers as you modify the image. Layers are similar to the layers in CorelDRAW.
In addition to the image adjustment tools (discussed later in this chapter), Photoshop has a solid collection of drawing tools, as illustrated in Figure 6-1.
Photoshop retains a decent, but not excellent, reputation for performance. You may not be able to do things as quickly as you can in CorelDRAW or draw as smoothly in Adobe Illustrator, but you can still create great-looking, professional-looking images. As with most software, Photoshop can become very slow when you attempt to modify complex images with lots of layers.

Deciding whether to use Photoshop or a different program
Would you prefer to use Adobe Photoshop or CorelDRAW to work with your images? Photoshop has more tools than CorelDRAW, but CorelDRAW has some advantages in that it’s specifically designed for a certain type of image creation and editing. You can also do more in the CorelDRAW interface than Photoshop.
If you’re a graphic design and print-shop pro, Photoshop is an obvious choice because its image-editing tools are quite nice and are easily accessible. You can also get great performance in Photoshop when working on large images.
You may want to evaluate both products and decide which you prefer. However, don’t let the performance differences dissuade you from using Photoshop

How to use the tutorial
The tutorial is divided into three main chapters. Each of these sections takes you through a different set of steps in Adobe Photoshop Elements. You can download this as a complete PDF file or print it out.
Steps 1-4 will get you started. This enables you to create a new project, open an existing project or create a new folder with your new project inside. Then you will need to add the new folder to the project.
You can’t edit any existing images unless you are in the catalog. In this tutorial we will edit an existing image. If you find yourself in this situation, open your catalog window, the catalog you use to manage projects. Right-click on the image and select Open in New Window, you’ll find it in the Catalog window after that.
Once you are in the catalog you will see two options – Open Documents (if the catalog is using documents) or Open Images (if it is not). Open the image you want to edit.
In this tutorial we are going to work on a flower image. We will use the Open Images option.
When you open a photo in Photoshop you will see three panels on the left side of the image.
On the left is the Layers panel, where we will add a new layer to make changes to the image.
In the Layers panel the upper layer is the top layer; the lower layers are below it. If you change the name of the layer in the Layer menu, it will change the name of the top layer; if you change the order of the layers in the Layer menu, it will also change the order of the layers.
The middle of the three panels is the Image panel. It contains the thumbnail for the image and the image itself.
When working with images you can add more than one image to the same project. For example, you could make an image of your grandmother for grandma.jpg and the date you went to visit her for the date.jpg.
Photoshop Elements uses the Catalog window to manage images. In the Catalog window you can select multiple images that are in the same project; the images are shown in a grid.
Step 5-6: Make a new folder
Right-click on the Catalog Window and select New Folder, then enter a name.

Brentwood opened in 1915 as a state hospital for the treatment of the mentally ill and tuberculosis. It was designed by architect Charles L. Thompson, who also designed Tuscaloosa’s Richland Hospital.

After a public hearing, a state Senate committee Monday is expected to vote on new rules governing the controversial practice known as the Safe Harbor Law.
The Safe Harbor Law allows children to be placed in private schools if their parents don’t cooperate with the state in providing services designed to overcome learning disabilities.
Parents of such students who have been enrolled since the 2002-2003 school year are eligible for such services.
But under the rules that are under consideration, parents would need to maintain at least one-tenth of their child’s instructional time in specialized schools.
Parents could also be paid on an hourly basis instead of a monthly basis, under the proposed changes.
California does not require a child to receive such services to be considered “otherwise eligible for special education.”
Ling Zhi, a parent of a Safe Harbor student who attended the hearing, said she is considering speaking out to educate the public about the detrimental effects of Safe Harbor.
“I’m really trying to educate the public on this law and what the hidden consequences could be,” Zhi said.
