As of patch 1.05, Sins of Solar Empire is compatible with expansions, Steam Workshop, Mercs and Terra to modify and change the game as per the players’ desire. This patch adds support for Steam Workshop, Mercs and Terra.[26]
Upon starting the game with a saved.skg file, an in-game message appeared explaining the system requirements to play Sins of a Solar Empire with Steam Workshop. In addition, a message appeared indicating that Steam Workshop can be accessed through the “Steam Workshop” option in the game. A “Mod Manager” window was then exhibited to create and modify mods.
In a similar fashion, new mods created with the ‘Mercs’ and ‘Terra’ add-ons can likewise be loaded. In addition, a “Mercs” or “Terra” group theme can be applied to the game window. Upon using the “Steam Workshop” menu, the user may simply download and install mods with the “Install Mod” button. Mods can be accessed using the “Mod” menu option and “Mod Manager” window.
Terra can be downloaded and installed via the Steam Workshop. Upon the successful installation of “Terra”, a mod file is found in the game. Terran Maps can be added to the game by accessing the “Terra” menu option and selecting “Map Pack”. After starting the game with the chosen map, the Terran Engine must be downloaded and compiled separately to the game executable. Different Terran maps can be added using the “Add Map” option, which functions similarly to modding the game. In the menu, “Terra Engine” is also accessible to select the Terran Engine needed, which can also be downloaded and installed.””

On March 10, 2013, Atari released an update for Sins of Solar Empire that added support for mods. The patch is available on Steam. The patch is backwards compatible, meaning that all TWI mod packs work on the new version. However, it cannot be used in conjunction with the games’ previous TWI mod packs, for they are designed to work with the older, stand-alone versions of the game. In addition, versions 1.04 and older will have no mod support in the game, as they did not use the file format used by the mods filters. No release date has been announced for the patch.
