I just bought PS CS6, which I will be getting as part of Lightroom CC. This review was made on the PC version of PS. I have not tested the Mac version yet. First of all, the UI is just great. The tab controls are quite clear and I like the fact that Ctrl + Z is used to undo, along with Shift + Ctrl + Z for redo. Using the scrollbar is very efficient. Of course, I still don’t understand why the image selector is not at the top of the screen, but this is not a deal-breaker. If you are using any of the many revision tools in the toolbox, it works very well. I don’t have any issues with the selection tool, but I’m not using it much in the first place. On the whole, I like the user interface.
Notable, however, is that the new Peer Select tool allows me to quickly and easily select and reposition an image within the PSD I am working in. I just hover with the mouse in the correct spot, and pressing the enter key selects the image and updates the selection box. I find this to be a useful feature. Also, the PSD version of Photoshop allows for a slew of organizational functions, such as grouping, customizing and tweaks to the tabs.
In short, I am happy with the picture opening – the performance can be a bit slow when you’re working with large files. There may be a slight delay when you enter a large number (thousands) of layers – but even with those large files, everything was still a smooth experience. Overall, I am pretty pleased with the purchase. I never really used earlier versions of Photoshop, so I have to say I can’t comment directly as to how good they are compared to later versions. As a matter of fact, the release of CS6 is labeled “The Best in Class Workflow Solution.”
As far as image quality, the processing is probably the best I’ve ever seen. Of course, I’m using an HP workstation, so the results should be better on average than say, an iPad.
The Blend tool is a direct way to blend layers in Photoshop and create wonderful effects. It all depends on the blend settings you choose, and if you find it’s too confusing, here’s a quick overview of the different settings.
On the bottom left of the blending options are the layer settings. It will include three main settings; Layer Fill, Layer Adjustment, and Lighting. These all control the way a layer is applied to the image.
Here, you’ll find the settings for each type of layer type. Fill, Adjustment, and Lighting all control how a layer affects the rest of a photo. Fill simply controls the amount of the layer that is visible while Adjustment and Lighting do everything else.
Burning allows you to lighten areas of the image. Dodge lets you lighten areas that are too dark. Ave will remove any areas of color from a video. And Screen will completely remove specific areas of an image.
