Guidance and recommendations developed by the CDC are available at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/symptoms-testing.html and https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/testing-can-i.html .

Synthetic peptide immunoassays may use components of the test that are not licensed. These commercial kits must be validated as part of validation of NPD for the underlying diagnostic technology prior to licensing. The performance characteristics of these technologies have not been fully characterized and a high degree of clinical suspicion, careful laboratory evaluation, and standard WHO guidelines must be followed. Laboratories should provide a clearly defined process for confirmation of a positive result using a different, licensed test.

On March 4, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that a second person in the United States had tested positive for coronavirus. The person, a resident of Illinois, developed symptoms on Feb. 24 and also returned from China.

Testing to detect SARS-CoV-2 RNA in a range of bodily specimens (including respiratory, stool, blood, and urine) has demonstrated relatively high sensitivity and specificity in symptomatic, recently infected patients. Using results for the throat swabs as the reference for a symptomatic but not yet tested person, the sensitivity and specificity of the stool and respiratory specimens were 86.6-87.5% and 98.3-100%, respectively. In a patient with no symptoms, who has not been recently infected, the sensitivity and specificity were 10.3-17.0% and 88.9-100%, respectively. These data have demonstrated that detection of viral RNA in the stool and respiratory samples provides an alternative method for detecting SARS-CoV-2 infection among persons with no or mild symptoms. Detection of viral RNA in the urine also provides an alternative method for detecting SARS-CoV-2 among patients with mild to moderate disease. Kasey-October-11-10-yo-Gymnastics-DVD-HQ.mpg tested
